Wisdom tooth problems
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come through and are your third set of molar teeth. They generally appear from the age of 18 onwards. It is not unusual for them to get stuck part way through and are notorious for being painful even when they are coming through correctly. To minimise problems developing around your wisdom teeth ensure you are maintaining a good cleaning regime around the area. When you brush twice a day, gently include this area rather than missing it. It may bleed a little at first and feel uncomfortable, but don't let that put you off.
If the area starts to become painful or swollen, ensure that you are keeping the area as clean as possible with a small toothbrush. (Large brushes don’t fit back there very easily) Electric brushes can often make this easier for you.
Usually where lower wisdom teeth are involved there is a small flap of gum that becomes inflamed due to trapped plaque and food debris. Try to clean beneath this if possible.
Use a salt water or chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily.
Use pain relief and anti-inflammatory over the counter medication as required to manage discomfort in keeping with recommended dosage.
If you develop pus discharge, restricted mouth opening or swelling, antibiotics may be required so please contact the practice on 02922 671858.
